Applications for Segmented Flow Chemistry
Reaction Screening and Optimization
Accendo's segmented flow chemistry systems enable the automation of reaction screening and optimization. The Conjure Segmented Flow Chemistry Reactor contains up to 40 reactant material inputs, which can be used to screen a variety of solvents and bases. Both the Conjure and Propel have automated control of segment residence times (incubation rate) and temperature. A series of segment can be easily be programmed to screen and optimize a broad breadth of conditions.
Reaction Kinetics
The Propel and Conjure Flow Chemistry Systems have the capabilities to accurately control and report reaction conditions (residence time and temperature) for accurate reaction kinetic data. Segments are only created once the flow reactor has achieved temperature and as segments transition through the reactor the actual temperature is monitored. Each of the flow chemistry systems utilize a UV flow cell at the reactor outlet, which accurately detects when segments exit the temperature controlled enviroment. The actual resident time along with the temperature are recorded and reported.
Compound Libraries
Segmented flow chemistry allows for the efficient synthesis of compound libraries. With up to 40 reactant vials in the Conjure, complex matrix libraries are simply programmed and with the segment automation capabilities rapidly executed. The throughput of libraries is much higher and reagent usage much lower than continuous flow systems.
Scale Up
Segmented flow chemistry is fast and efficient with the ability of preserving expensive and precious starting materials. But segmented flow also is used for the scaling of compounds. There are several advantages to using segmented flow chemistry for scale up;
• Conditions used to make small amounts (20 mgs)during screening and library synthesis are the same to make 10 grams.
• Pumps and syringes are never exposed to the reactants, which enables the use of highly aggressive materials such as H

SO

.
• Segments minimize diffusion of product through the flow tube so reaction conditions remain more consistent.
• The UV detection can be used for quality control, which continually monitors that product is being processed.
