Reaction Scaling
With a segmented flow approach, the Conjure and Propel have been configured to allow for flexibility of reaction scale. When programming reaction experiments in both systems, one of the programming variables is segment volume. Depending upon the hardware configuration, segments may vary in volume from 250 µL to > 5 ml.

When performing screening and optimization experiments typical segment volumes range from 250 µL to 1 ml (milligrams) and when larger scale quantities are needed, our systems are programmed to produce multiple large segments and and by continuously injecting them 100s of grams can be produced.

Unlike continuous flow, in segmented flow, the preparation of reaction segments in the Conjure and Propel are independant to the incubation rate (Transport Pump Flow Rate). Therefore, once a segment is created, injected and clears the injection loop, the system may begin and preparation of a follow on segment. A continuous flow system can only process one experiment at a time.

When the flow systems are in preparative scale up operation, segments are injected with little to no separation.

Because the reactor geometry is the same regardless of segment volume the reaction conditions remain the same regardless of the segment volume. There's no need to optimize when scaling from milligrams too grams.
